We all love warm weather—less clothing, more skin to display. Spray tanning is the go-to solution when you want to enjoy the binge in the sun this summer without sacrificing your glow.
But there’s more to spray tan than simply getting bronzed.
If you’re thinking of having a spray tan and this is your first time, here are the few things you should know before you go glow.
- Shave and exfoliate prior to appointment
For the best results, you should wax and shave at least 24 hours before your appointment. Make sure you exfoliate your skin to remove any dry, dead skin to ensure the tan will adhere smoothly and look even. Scrub slowly from head to toe, focusing particularly on naturally darker spots like eyebrows, elbows, and knees.
The technician will provide you a protective barrier cream to apply on drier spots like ankles, elbows, and knees as these areas tend to absorb more mist.
- No make up
Show up for your spray tan having removed that entire makeup. Lotions and makeup applied on the skin act as a barrier to the fake tan solution. You don’t want to leave the beauty salon with a bad tan simply because you failed to wipe your make-up away.
- Protect your nails
Wear polish before hopping into the spray tan booth to prevent your nails from staining. In that case, it will be easier to rub off wipe off any stains of the spray tan that dropped on your nails.
- What about your hair?
Tie your hair using a hair band and make sure your hair is up. You don’t want to have your hair getting on the way while you get your glow.
- Get the right outfit
To avoid your spray tan staining, you need to select the perfect outfit before getting the fake tan. Try to wear loose clothing such as thong flip-flops at home and when you go to bed. Do not wear stockings, socks or boots as these will rub off on your tan.
- Can you shower?
Yes, but you’ll have to wait for 8 hours to 12 hours before you have your first shower. That way, you’ll have given the fake tan enough time to adhere to the skin. If you are in a rush, ask your salon about an express formula to rinse in half the time.
- Apply lotion
A spray tan typically lasts up to 7 days but you’ll have to keep your top layer of skin hydrated most of the time to ensure it lasts longer. One way to do is to apply a water based lotion on a daily basis. Of course, it won’t dry out, so don’t be alarmed. You still have a whole week to enjoy your super glow. Remember no oils. Oils will streak and remove your tan.
- Pat your skin
Another spray tan aftercare tip is to pat yourself dry with a towel instead of rubbing when you get out of the shower. This will ensure you don’t exfoliate and that you preserve your fake tan as long as possible. The spray tan formula is designed to slowly fade as the top layer of your skin regenerates.
