The ProCold competition
The competition is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Their aim is to expedite the shift to production and usage of environmentally friendly refrigerants, and the competition is co-ordinated by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency.
What makes these cabinets special?

All the winning cabinets in the competition used “natural” refrigerants, and their energy efficiency was a determining factor. Other refrigerant winners in the ProCold awards included Gram’s Superior Plus K 72 G, which uses isobutane as its refrigerant. It also has an energy consumption that is an astounding five times more efficient than other comparable products (285kWh/year).
The Carrier’s Optimer display cabinet was another award winner that uses propane as a refrigerant, and it won the best vertical refrigeration display cabinet award. Liebherr collected two awards, one for its glass door model used for drink coolers and the other for its ice cream freezers, both using isobutane. Their energy consumptions were 449kWh/year and 589kWh/year respectively.
It is clear that the upward trend in commercial refrigeration is a focus on finding better ways of refrigeration that are environmentally friendly, use only natural refrigerants, and are as energy-efficient as possible whilst also serving their purpose.
