Introduction

Each individual has an innate strength in him based on which he behaves. This innate strength is called his strength and the skills that he does not possess are called his weaknesses.  With continuous practice and special training, he can cultivate the skills he does not have. However, this can be done only to a certain extent. If a particular skill is absent in an individual then it is better he does not attempt to work in that field. There are many students who take up a profession, under parental pressure. Some take it up under peer pressure. Still others do it because their kin are in the same profession. However, after all this, they end up not working in that profession. This happens because their decision to pursue a certain field of study was taken without any guidance or due diligence. All this is set to change, thanks to certain tests.

What are aptitude tests and what do they tell companies about candidates

An aptitude is defined as an innate ability of an individual. This can also be a learned or an acquired ability to work in certain job roles. It indicates the potential of a particular candidate to perform well in certain job roles. Studies have indicated that invariably aptitude tests are more or less accurate in predicting the potential for success. Only having technical or functional knowledge is not enough to succeed in a job role. Any job requires multiple skills like analysing, planning, comprehending, calculating, strategizing, etc. These tests incorporate many factors like numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, abstract reasoning, speed, accuracy and other such abilities. Therefore, aptitude tests are an accurate measurement of the potential of an individual.

They tell companies the following details about prospective candidates:

  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to analyse situations
  • Ability to reason
  • Ability to think logically
  • To take decisions based on data
  • To take decisions based on past trends
  • Ability to understand graphs, tables and charts
  • Ability to comprehend written and verbal communication
  • Ability to communicate well (verbal and written)
  • Language and grammar skills
  • Ability to write coherently
  • Basic numeric skills
  • Advanced quantitative skills
  • Ability to learn new things quickly
  • Ability to detect patterns and establish relationships
  • Ability to plan and strategize
  • Ability to comprehend complex issues
  • Ability to visualize
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to concentrate without getting distracted
  • Use of working memory
  • Attention to detail

Thus, the importance of aptitude tests and the information they give companies cannot be understated.

Now to deal with the important question, are aptitude tests necessary? This question has an answer. They are necessary because it will save the lives of many students who make uninformed decisions without knowing their strengths and weaknesses and entering a particular field. Such tests will also help companies recruit and assess before recruiting the fresh graduates whom they pick up directly from the university campus. Therefore, aptitude tests are eminently necessary.
